It's almost the first of the month - the time when many bloggers remind us to backup our genealogy data. Normally, I ignore those reminders. I ignore them because I feel like I have a good backup plan. I backup my RootsMagic database every time I close it after making any changes. (I change the name to add a character or two to reflect the time.) My genealogy files are stored on the hard drive of my computer and synced with Dropbox I use Second Copy to copy files (documents, pictures and music) to an external USB drive I use Backblaze to backup my files off site Since I am backing up my files in multiple ways, I usually don't worry about the reminders. That was until this morning. When I sat down to my computer this morning, I had a BackBlaze warning that my files hadn't been backed up since May 22nd.  So, how did my backup system fail? This morning, I watched one of the Barefoot Genealogist''s new videos: What Are Ancestry ThruLines? Even though I was already familiar with Ancestry's ThruLines - and appreciate how they are helping me with my DNA matches, I learned several things about how Ancestry's 'Common Ancestors' and 'ThruLines' work from this video.

While trying to find an obituary or notice of death for my husband's relative who died during World War II, I came across a great resource for anyone researching Kansans who served during World War II - particularly those who were injured, captured or killed. The Manhattan Mercury (Manhattan, Kansas) had a series of articles entitled 'War Casualties' that appeared on a regular basis. The Manhattan Mercury was the only paper that had this type of article. Since Fort Riley is near Manhattan, that may have been a factor in the papers decision to publish this information. This paper is searchable on Newspapers.com.

As I was transcribing deeds from Jefferson County, Indiana, I found a connection with a guardian record. In the deed, Isaac Crawford sold land to Thomas Alexander. In the guardian record, Thomas Alexander is reimbursed for expenses as a guardian of an orphan on Isaac Crawford. So, what is the connection between Thomas Alexander and Isaac Crawford? Your mission, should you decide to accept it (cue the Mission Impossible! music) is to: 1)  Determine where your ancestral families were on 18 May 1919 - 100 years ago. 2)  List them, their family members, their birth years, and their residence location (as close as possible).  Do you have a photograph of their residence from about that time, and does the residence still exist? My Grandparents Leon Crawford was living with his parents at 504 Ave G in Dodge City Winnie Letha Currey was likely living with her sister, Myrtle. Winnie traveled from Kansas City to Dodge City in 1918 to help Myrtle with the birth of her first child, Dorothy. Winnie and Leon were married on Christmas Eve in 1919 at Myrtle's house. Edward O. Briles and his wife Pauline (Mentzer) Briles were likely living in Woodson County in 1919. Edward's World War I draft card indicated they were living in Everett Township, Woodson County in June of 1917. By 1920, they had moved to Allen County.

Recently, Randy Seaver posted about the number of DNA ThruLines he had for each ancestor. Curious, I decided to check out my own ThruLines to see how many I have for each ancestor. While trying to figure out why I can't find 4th cousin matches for descendants of Nelson G. Crawford, I ran across my first obviously incorrect ThruLines screen. One of my known third cousin once removed showed up on the ThruLines for my 4th great-grandfather, James Crawford thru the Walter Beggs and the Monroe line.

I like Ancestry's new ThruLines feature! Unfortunately, it is pointing out one of my frustrations with my DNA results. I have several verified second and third cousin DNA matches on my Crawford line but we never got a DNA circle for my 3rd great grandfather, Nelson G. Crawford. When Ancestry released ThruLines, I was hoping to locate some fourth cousins thru one of Nelson's other children. However, the ThruLines for Nelson G Crawford only includes DNA matches going thru my 2nd great grandfather, Washington Marion Crawford. It does not include any lines going thru the siblings of Washington Marion Crawford.

It's the spring of 1971 and I'm a freshman at Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia. I've just started my new job as an assistant in the chemistry department. I worked two afternoons a week - Tuesdays and Thursday - in the storeroom. It was my job to check out and then check in glassware, thermometers and other supplies to the chemistry students. Most of my 'customers' were in Chemistry I or II students. Since dress codes for my sorority were still enforce, I was not only one of the few females working in the department, but I was the only one in a skirt. 

One of the challenges in genealogy is proving that a person in one location is the same person in another place and time. I often turn to land records to help make that connection. Thus, finding a land patent for Indiana land indicating that James Crawford came from Garrard County, Kentucky is 'genealogy gold'.
