UPDATE - Tree Not Searchable (Ancestry / RootsMagic)

The verdict is in! 

 I need to accept hints on Ancestry in order for my tree to become searchable.


Ironically, my DNA 'shared matches' list was working even though I was accepting the hints on RootsMagic and not on Ancestry!

Not only do I have shared Ancestry hints and circles but the list of hints and circles has been growing.

Thus, I didn't think there was an issue with the way I was using RootsMagic!



Now, that I'm aware of the issue, I'm going to change my workflow.
  • Accept valid hint on Ancestry
  • Use RootsMagic to source that hint and manually add the image (as I was doing prior to TreeShare)
  • Ignore pink sources and media on TreeShare
 In the meantime, I'm going back thru my 5 generation pedigree and
  • Clicking confirmed sources and changing them to undecided within RootsMagic
  • Accepting those sources on Ancestry
 Now, I wait for Ancestry indexing to pick up my tree.

I would like to thank the RootsMagic community (both Facebook and RootsMagic Forums) for helping me work thru this issue.

Marking a hint Accepted on Ancestry will mark it Accepted in RootsMagic. If you turn around in RM and mark it undecided your going to flip the switch and mark in undecided on Ancestry too. Whatever you set in one place will be how its set in the other. Don't want to see you drive yourself crazy trying to make RootsMagic hints look one way and Ancestry's another. It's not possible.

Unfortunately, if I accept an Ancestry hint and then do TreeShare, I get the generic source and the generically named image.

Thus, I'm giving up on TreeShare for sources and media for now. I will enter them in RM as I did in the past.

I've been watching my Blogger stats and have noticed that Google is not listed as a referring site. Thus, I began to wonder why. I've been thru the settings and Google's Search Console and I haven't found an answer. So, I'm going to document what I see and then reach out for help. Conflicting Information

Do you use Ancestry's 'leaf' hints? If so, do you occasionally find a hint or two that have information that doesn't fit with what you already know about the person or family? I usually find such hints among the multitude of hints for the people in my trees. Usually, those 'incorrect' hints are 'way off'. These 'way off' hints are for events in England when the person/family is living in the United States. Today, however, I came across a hint for a death date that was a few months off of the date shown on Find a Grave. The hint was and index record with reference to a film number on Family Search for District of Columbia Deaths and Burials, 1840-1964. Even though the death date was different, the family names matched.

Ancestry Hints: Public vs Private Tree

I'm writing in response to Russ Worthington 's comment on the Genea-Musing's blog post, When Did Ancestry.com Last Index Ancestry Member Trees ? In the comment, Russ brings up the issue of hints not showing. Since I haven't noticed an issue with 'missing' hints on my un-indexed tree, Russ's post made me question whether I was indeed missing hints. However, I did notice one difference between my tree and Russ's experiment. I work with a public tree and Russ' test was with a private tree. Thus, I wanted to know whether public trees produced hints when the tree lacked Ancestry sources. Thus, I needed a public tree (small) without Ancestry sources.
