Saturday Night Genealogy Fun
Calling all Genea-Musings Fans:
Here is your assignment if you choose to play along (cue the Mission Impossible music, please!):
Based on the genealogy projects we’ve worked on, your uses fall into several broad areas:
Reading and interpreting historical records. You’ve used ChatGPT and other AI tools to transcribe difficult documents such as wills, delayed birth certificates, obituaries, newspaper articles, pension records, land records, court cases, and marriage records. You then go beyond transcription by asking what the document tells you about relationships, property, occupations, migration, or family circumstances. A good recent example is reconstructing the family of James Crawford from his Rockbridge County, Virginia, will.
Understanding land and geography. Land records have become much more meaningful when you use AI to interpret legal descriptions, patents, deeds, dower rights, adjoining property, and “tenants in common.” Your Crawford research is a particularly good example. You’ve explored how the locations of James Crawford, the Sellers family, Thomas Crawford, and others might reveal relationships that aren't explicitly stated in records.
Putting ancestors into historical context. Rather than recording only birth, marriage, and death dates, you’ve asked what was happening around an ancestor. Your Civil War research on James Marshall Ricketts, Noah Washington Briles, Washington Marion Crawford, and Albert Hutchinson has included military units, enlistment ages, pension records, POW experiences, and the larger historical circumstances in which they served.
Reconstructing an ancestor's life. You frequently combine records from different periods and ask AI to create a chronology or narrative. That has helped transform scattered facts about people such as Judson Foster Crawford, Julia Harding Hutchinson, Hiram Miles Currey, and Angelina Jane Burke Currey into understandable life stories.
Testing genealogical hypotheses. Your Albert Hutchinson project may be the clearest example. Instead of asking AI to tell you who Albert's parents were, you've used it to help formulate hypotheses, organize evidence, evaluate conflicting records, interpret DNA matches, and identify weaknesses in your conclusions. That eventually led you to unlink one set of proposed parents and investigate Alvin Hutchinson as a possible father.
Analyzing DNA in conjunction with traditional genealogy. You've used AI to think through autosomal DNA shared matches, Ancestry ThruLines, descendant lines, color-coded clusters, and Crawford Y-DNA results. Your recent comparison of the Thomas Crawford line with the Alexander and James Crawford lines demonstrates how AI can help explain what DNA evidence does—and importantly, does not—prove.
Investigating FAN networks. AI has helped you notice that neighbors, witnesses, guardians, purchasers at estate sales, adjoining landowners, and associates may be as important as the ancestor being researched. This has been especially useful with your Crawford research, where the Anderson, Maxwell, Douglas, Logan, Kennedy, Sellers, Duggins, and other families provide clues to relationships and migration.
Understanding occupations and everyday life. You've asked what an ancestor's occupation or circumstances would actually have meant. That includes understanding railroad work in Dodge City, military service, boarding houses, nineteenth-century healing practices, farming, and household activities. Even your museum research into spinning wheels, wool carders, radios, cameras, and other artifacts contributes to your understanding of the material world in which ancestors lived.
Exploring historical technology and material culture. Your work with the Nemaha County Historical Society complements your genealogy. Asking AI how a spinning wheel, wool carder, Radiola speaker, fluoroscope, or early camera worked helps you interpret objects that would have been familiar to earlier generations.
Finding the significance hidden in a document. You've increasingly moved beyond “What does this say?” to questions such as “Why does this matter?” A land record showing two men as tenants in common, a fifteen-year-old appearing to enlist in the Civil War, an estate purchaser sharing a surname, or an unusual middle initial can generate entirely new research questions.
Turning research into stories and multimedia. After doing the research, you've used ChatGPT, Gemini, NotebookLM, Canva, Suno, and YouTube to transform evidence into blog posts, timelines, biographies, infographics, audio discussions, songs, videos, and feature images. “Fifteen and Riding,” based on James Marshall Ricketts's Civil War story, is a particularly interesting example of moving from records → analysis → historical interpretation → creative storytelling.
One of the most important patterns I see is that AI hasn't replaced your genealogy research process—it has expanded what you can do with the evidence you find. You still locate records, evaluate sources, compare individuals, work with DNA matches, and decide whether a conclusion is justified. AI helps you interrogate that evidence from additional angles.
In fact, your workflow could be summarized as:
Find the record → extract the evidence → ask questions → add historical/geographical context → compare evidence → develop or test a hypothesis → tell the ancestor's story.
And you've used different AI tools at different stages. ChatGPT has been particularly useful for extended conversations in which one question leads to another. Gemini has provided another analytical perspective that you've sometimes compared or quoted in your research. Google/NotebookLM has helped turn collections of source material into summaries, audio discussions, infographics, and other ways of seeing the same evidence. Suno and Canva have helped take the final step from research to storytelling.
That last point may be the most distinctive aspect of how you've used AI: you aren't only trying to discover who your ancestors were. You're using these tools to understand where they lived, what they experienced, how their communities worked, and what their records can tell us about their lives.
